Planning a Wedding in 2025? Avoid These Common Mistakes Most Couples Make.

Wedding Invitations

When it comes to wedding planning in 2025, many couples – especially brides – find themselves overwhelmed with all the information and advice available online. From blogs, AI threads and Tik Tok accounts claiming to have the ‘ultimate guide to plan your wedding’, a lot of this is written by people with little to no experience in the wedding industry. While they can be a decent starting point, they can give you the wrong advice, create unrealistic expectations and sometimes leave you more confused than when you started. Trends frequently change and those trends may not translate well for what you want for your wedding. Here are a couple of tips on how to avoid the biggest mistakes when planning a wedding in 2025.

So who should you go to for advice on your wedding?

One of the most overlooked steps when wedding planning is actually planning your wedding with, you guessed it, your vendors. It may not seem obvious at first, but these are people you’ll be spending your entire wedding day with, and you should trust them. If you’ve hired a planner, they should be your go-to for your structure, timeline and vendor coordination as they’ll be connecting with everyone leading up to the wedding.

When couples decide to forego a wedding planner, there’s still someone incredibly valuable in your corner: your wedding photographer. With experience attending hundreds of weddings, we often play a key role in helping guide you through your wedding timeline and logistics. However, for whatever reason, this is something usually frowned upon.

It’s pretty normal to work with the same vendors throughout a wedding season as you build relationships with them throughout the year and we typically recommend one another to our couples. I remember one night after a long wedding, the planner and I were chatting about what it’s like to photograph a wedding with and without a planner. One thing that came up was the degree of which I help my couples plan their wedding day when there isn’t a wedding planner. I told her that this is one of my favorite parts of the job. Being able to use my experience to offer guidance and build out a schedule that sets my couples up for a smooth and stress free day is amazing.

To my surprise, she told me that I shouldn’t be helping with timelines… because ‘it’s not my job, and that planners exist for a reason’. Unbeknownst to me, the majority of photographers also feel this way.

Let’s clear this up real quick so we’re all on the same page.

As your photographer, yes, my primary job is to document your wedding day to preserve those meaningful moments for you to relive. My job doesn’t stop there. My job is to also make sure you have an amazing experience with me. This means being there to offer advice and help you as best as I can. You hire us because you trust us. You trust to take amazing photos of your wedding, and you trust us to be there to help you with anything we can. Call it selfish, but planning a smooth wedding day makes my job a lot easier. A smooth and perfectly timed wedding means you’re more relaxed. When you’re more relaxed, the better wedding photo and videos turn out.

Before booking your photographer, make sure you ask them what their approach looks like after you sign them. Have them walk you through a rough timeline of how they’d structure a wedding day and why they’d make the decisions they do. It’s a great way to understand if they’re the type of photographer who will go the extra mile. To help you out, I also put together a list of key questions you should be asking your photographer before booking them.
